You might be surprised to learn that just about every human being has 100,000 strands of hair on their heads. However, because of differences in texture, some people appear to have less hair, and some people appear to have a whole lot more.

What is texture?

Texture is the circumference of each individual strand of hair. If you have fine hair then your hair has a small circumference and you appear to have less hair on your head. Conversely, if you have coarse hair then your hair has a larger circumference and this bulk makes you appear to have a lot more hair than someone with finer hair texture.

Ultimately, the texture of your hair is simply a matter of genetics; if your parents have coarse hair, you will also, if they have finer hair, you will too. However, thankfully the hair care industry has developed ways you can enhance and modify your hair’s natural texture to achieve the popular styling choices you desire.

Fine Textured Hair

Fine textured hair is generally straight and can appear limp because of residues from hair care products. It can easily be processed by perming and coloring. However, it is important to not over-process fine hair because it can be easily damaged.

There are many things you can do to enhance the texture of fine hair. Some of them are:

Use a Clarifying Shampoo – To reduce residues and oils you should use a clarifying shampoo on fine hair. This will strip off the residue left by shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Kenra manufactures a shampoo called: Kenra Clarifying Shampoo. Kenra’s Clarifying Shampoo is ideal for removing mineral deposits and chemical build-up from hair styling products. However, while this shampoo cleanses your hair, it also adds shine and body.

Use Mousse While Wet – After you shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, adding mousse to your hair (when it is wet) can give it added texture. Start at the roots and massage the mousse into your hair and then let it air dry, or dry it with a hairdryer on low heat. Not everyone wants to use the same hold factor in a mousse. There is a very wide variety of mousses to choose from, however I have three different options to look at. First is the Alterna Life Volumizing Spray Mousse. This is an aerosol mousse that has a light to medium hold. The Alterna Life Mousse was manufactured with fine and thin hair in mind. The exclusive LIFE blend of extracts provides weightless thickening agents that define, maintain, and preserve volume all day long. This product also contains anti humectants that effectively repel humidity, leaving your hair with a smooth texture and a radiant shine.

If you need more of a hold, I would go with a medium hold mousse. An example of this is the Biosilk Silk Mousse. This is an alcohol free mousse that is rich, creamy, and infused with concentrated silk and botanical extracts which add volume and shine.

If you require a strong holding mousse, I would recommend the Brocato Volumizing Foam. This product is a strong holding mousse that creates visual texture and stunning shine. This mousse allows your hair style to be firm, yet still moveable. This is an exceptional volumizing foam with a powerful hold that is great for all hair types!

Color Your Fine Hair – Another good way to add texture to fine hair is to color it. Coloring your hair adds texture to it by enlarging the hair shaft.

Coarse Textured Hair

Coarse, textured hair is generally thicker and harder to process. Coarse hair resists perming, straightening, and coloring.

There are a few things you can do to work with the texture of coarse hair. Some of them are:

Add Moisture – Coarse hair needs added moisture to control frizz and curl. By using a good conditioner you can insure you course hair will lay flatter and be shinier. Some manufacturers offer leave in treatments, rinse-out treatments, or hydrating conditioners that will help to incorporate moisture back into your hair. Bonacure makes a rinse-out treatment entitled Bonacure Moisture Treatment. This is a great product for naturally dry, or naturally coarse hair. This product reconstructs the moisture in your hair shaft from the inside out, which balances the moisture in your hair.

Joico makes a leave-in detangler that you can use on a daily basis which is called Joico Daily Leave-in Detangler. This is a conditioning agent that helps to condition, detangle, and make hair easier to manage. This product will also help you restore the moisture balance in your hair.

People rave about Pureology products and what they do for their hair, and that is why I would recommend the Pureology Hydrating Conditioner. The hydrating conditioner works from the inside out to keep your hair color fresh and your hair detangled ,all with renewed body and amazing shine! Hair is left conditioned, color protected, and shiny!

Air Dry – One of the most important things you can do for coarse hair is to let it air dry. Wash it, condition it, and then let it dry on its own. By not handling your hair too much while it is drying, it will not frizz.

Whether you have fine hair, coarse hair, or something in between, you can work with it by learning about texture and which products to use and which to avoid. By using products that are beneficial for your hair texture, you can better amplify the hair that you were given.

Is your hair stressed out?

If you are mixing chemicals with hair color you need to check out the following…because your hair is Stressed Out!

If you’re having trouble with all over dryness, and still feel you need to have a Perm or a Relaxer, but don’t want to stop your hair color service… try these Tips to help keep the shine in your hair. These are a few different ways to keep your hair in the best condition that you can when using these chemicals together.

Fact:

Even if your hair is in the best of condition, it will still need the help of a good treatment at least each week. If you do your color at home, you should also use a good treatment at least once a week if mixing chemicals…I’ll tell you how…and it won’t cost a fortune.

Number One Rule:

Always have the Perm or Relaxer a few weeks before the color or at least a full 10 days. Never have the two Permanent processes on the same day other than using a milder Semi-Permanent color to refresh the fading of color after the Perm.

Trouble Spots

Permanent Waves:

During the processing time of the Perm, the “bonds” within the hair shaft are being changed into a new form…from straight to curly. The hair, as you know it, is wrapped around the perm rod to make these changes. The tension and the pressures can be great on the hair often causing damage within the hair shaft if improperly used. The desired curl is then sealed into place with a final lotion called neutralizer…which forms the new curl. At this point if the neutralizer is left on too long the hair is more damaged. The hair should only be neutralized for 5 minutes….no more. Often it is left on for 15-20 minutes causing real dryness to the over all hair shaft, especially if the hair has been previously tinted.

To rearrange the straight hair into soft wavy hair, it is often less damaging when it is not wrapped so tight around the Perm rod…the Body Wave. Then you have the ‘fuzzy hair look’ which has been wrapped round a tiny perm rod so many times it looks dry and frizzy. This is even worse if you have had hair color just before the perm. It also happens when the wrong solution has been used or over processed.

When you have a Body Wave, just to give a bit of overall curl to your hair, it is best to have your color service two weeks before the Perm. Also, always go to the best Chemical person, so you know they will use good judgment when choosing the Perm solution for your previously tinted hair.

Relaxers:

When using a Relaxer, always do the color two weeks before the relaxer. This chemical will remove the hair color from the hair even more than the Perm. Never do a Relaxer at home! Most professionals know how to do this service…but be sure to call and ask before booking the service. Then go in to see the person that will be doing the service. This will be a “no charge” consultation, so take advantage of it. The person doing the service will be glad you came in so they can see just what condition your hair is in. You may have to wait for a week to get the service but it’s better to wait than break your hair off.

Asian Relaxers:

Are they any better than the regular Relaxer… if you do pay $700.00 and sit for 5 hours for the service? The hair is relaxed when it is finished, but the hair is still dry and often straighter than is needed. The over straight hair is very drying if be over Tinted or Highlighted hair. It often can break off, which has to grow out over the months to get back to normal. (1/2 inch a month) There’s not one treatment in the present market place that will replace broken hair. Treatments only help the hair retain its moisture.

In the end Perms and Relaxers remove color from color treated hair. They dry it out and leave it dull and flat looking. The only color that will really help repair this overall lackluster is using a Semi-Permanent hair color as a regular service or as a color refresher after the service.

Semi-Permanent / Demi-Permanent Color:

If you have ultra straight hair, and must have a Perm to give softness to your hair, you might think of using a Semi-Permanent hair color every month rather than a Permanent colorant. The Semi-Permanent will penetrate less and will not react so harshly with other chemicals. You will have to do the color process more often but it will help prevent an overall dryness.

If you have very curly hair or have uneven curl in your hair that you feel you must have relaxed you must also consider the Semi-Permanent hair colorant. It will help retain the shine that will be removed with the Relaxer chemicals.

Treatment:

When using two different chemicals together, it is imperative that you use a conditioner at least once a day if you shampoo daily or at least once a week, if you shampoo your hair two or three time a week. You can buy the professional treatments in the salon or go to the beauty supply. When you buy, just get one that says “Repair” in the description of the product.

You can use this in the shower, or just rinse your hair and apply, and keep it in your hair while you do projects around your home or work out at the gym. If you don’t shampoo before and you have left it on for an extended length of time, shampoo and then use a conditioner so your hair will be easy to comb through. Please don’t use heat when using the treatments over color treated hair.

Always use a very large-tooth comb for combing …don’t ever use a brush over wet hair because this pulls and stretches the hair therefore, breaks it off.

Last word:

As a professional, I don’t recommend using Relaxers or Perms with Permanent color treated hair, or if you have bleach Highlights. I suggest, if you need curl or need your hair straightened, you use a Semi-Permanent colorant instead of the Permanent Colorant. Also, that you switch to using High Lift tints for the highlights rather than using bleach. This change will help retain as much moisture as possible with the mixing of these two chemicals.

We may not want to admit it, but winter is just around the corner. This means that your skin care regime must change in order to accommodate those harsh winds and dry days.

Stocking up on quality skin care products is a good idea, though these products alone won’t help you fight those winter winds. Thankfully, there are some things that you can do to protect your skin all winter long. Do you want to know the best part about winter skin care steps? They are easy to accomplish, and they will provide you with glowing skin all year long.

Let’s begin with dry skin, since it is the number one skin care complaint during the winter months. Many people believe that dry skin is caused by a lack of oil within the skin. Simply put, this is not true. You see, dry skin occurs when water is lacking. Drink more water during the winter months, and make sure to slather yourself in a good natural moisturizer when you get out of the shower every morning.

Additionally, if you get into the habit of eating healthy foods that contain lots of fatty acids, you will find that your skin responds favourably to this type of diet. Foods like nuts, figs, dried fruits, and some seeds are packed with the nutrients that your skin needs. It is also really important to use a great facial moisturizer daily.

What is considered a “good” facial moisturizer? Well, a lot of skin care products claim to be made from natural, healthy, ingredients, but the fact is that many of these products contain alcohol. Alcohol will dry out your face faster than any winter wind will. So, if you are using an alcohol based moisturizer every day, you are effectively sucking the moisture out of your skin daily.

Instead, look for a moisturizer that contains natural ingredients. Also, follow up your nightly cleansing routine with a good mask that will replenish your skin. Masks that contain mud are packed with nutrients and ingredients that will help fight dry winter skin. Skin care during the winter months is a bit different from skin care during the summer months, so make sure to switch skin care products accordingly.

How often should you change your skin care products? Well, that depends upon the quality of the product itself. Products that are made from wholesome ingredients tend to work wonders all year long. However, if you are using a product that dries your skin out, you can be sure that this product will not help your skin at all. As you can see, the types of skin care products that you use really will make a difference this winter.

Those winter winds are harsh – there’s no getting around this fact. Still, you can fight the brutal hands of Mother Nature with just a few quick skin care tips. Remember to moisturize, drink plenty of water, eat the right fruits, and to use top natural products. When it comes to skin care, it never pays to neglect the needs of your skin.
